# How the Transfer Market Works: A Beginner's Guide to Auctions and Offers

Unlike games where players appear from thin air, every player in World League Manager belongs to a real club managed by a real person — or an [AI manager](/blog/best-starter-clubs) for unmanaged clubs. To sign a player, you need to go through the transfer market.

If you're brand new, check out [why every player only belongs to one club](/blog/why-every-player-belongs-to-one-club) first — it's the foundation of how WLM works.

## Listing Players

As a manager, you can list any of your players for transfer. You set:

- **Starting price** — the minimum you'll accept
- **Reserve price** (optional) — a hidden minimum that must be met
- **Auction duration** — how long the bidding stays open

Once listed, the player appears on the transfer market for all managers to see. Consider using [tactical blueprints](/blog/tactical-blueprints-explained) to evaluate a player's tactical fit before bidding.

## Bidding

When you find a player you want, you place a bid. The auction system works like this:

1. Bids must exceed the current highest bid
2. Anti-snipe protection extends the auction if a bid comes in near the deadline
3. The highest bidder when the auction closes wins the player
4. The transfer fee comes from your club's budget

## Direct Offers

You can also make direct offers to clubs for their players, even if they're not listed. The other manager can accept, reject, or counter-offer. It's real negotiation with real people — one of the things that makes WLM [different from fantasy football](/blog/wlm-vs-fantasy-football).

## Budget Management

Your transfer budget is finite and tied to your club's financial health. Overspend and your [board will notice](/blog/understanding-board-confidence). The finance confidence metric tracks how responsibly you're managing the books — blow the budget and you risk the sack.

## Tips for New Managers

- **Scout before you bid.** Check player form, fitness, and contract status.
- **Don't blow your budget early.** The season is long and injuries happen.
- **Watch the auction timings.** Last-minute bids can trigger extensions.
- **Negotiate.** Sometimes a direct offer gets you a better deal than an auction.
- **Pick the right club.** Starting at a [beginner-friendly club](/blog/best-starter-clubs) gives you more room for transfer mistakes.

The transfer market is where careers are made. Master it, and you'll [build a reputation](/blog/the-career-system) capable of landing top jobs. Ready to get started? [The free beta is live now](/blog/free-beta-now-live-football-manager-game).
