# Where Player Ratings Come From: Real Matches, Real Performances

Most management games hand you a player with a fixed set of numbers. Pace 82, finishing 79, and that's who he is until you train him.

World League Manager works differently. Your squad is made of real footballers, and their ratings come from what those footballers actually did on the pitch in real matches. When your striker scores a hat-trick on a Saturday, that lands in your game. When he's anonymous for 70 minutes, that lands too.

This guide explains where those numbers come from, why they appear when they do, and what happens when one of your players doesn't feature at all.

## What a Performance Score Actually Is

Every time one of your players appears in a real fixture, the game builds a **Performance Score** for that appearance. It isn't a subjective mark out of ten — it's assembled from things that measurably happened:

- Goals and assists
- Penalties scored
- Shots on target
- Big chances missed, which count against the player
- Clean sheets, for goalkeepers and defenders
- Goals conceded, also for goalkeepers and defenders

Each of those contributions carries a weight, and the total becomes the score you see next to that player on your team sheet. Score twice and set one up, and the number will be high. Miss two clear chances and it won't be.

## Position Changes How You're Judged

A centre-back who keeps a clean sheet has had an excellent afternoon, even with no shots and no assists. A striker with the same statistics has not.

So contributions are weighted by what the player is actually there to do — attacking output, creative output, defensive work, and goalkeeping are each valued differently. A defender is judged as a defender, which means your back line and your keeper can carry a match on merit rather than sitting there as passengers to whatever the forwards did.

That also means squad building matters. Loading up on strikers doesn't guarantee big weekly numbers if the rest of the team is leaking goals.

## Why Scores Appear Gradually

Scores are **revealed** through the day rather than dropping all at once. Most reveals happen during daytime hours, with a smaller share overnight, so there's usually something new to check whenever you log in.

There's a practical reason for the drip, too: until a score is revealed, it stays hidden. That keeps managers from reverse-engineering how a match is going and reacting with perfect information. Substitutions are allowed while a player's score is still hidden — once it's out, that decision has been made for you.

Live match days are more interesting because of it. You're watching numbers land one at a time, not reading a finished spreadsheet.

## When a Real Player Doesn't Play

Real footballers get rested, dropped, injured or left out of a squad entirely. Their club might not even be playing that week. So what happens to your XI?

The game falls back on the player's **recent qualifying appearances** — matches where he actually played a meaningful amount of football — and draws his rating from that recent body of work. During the close season, when real fixtures dry up, that pool is widened so the sample stays sensible rather than clinging to two stale games from May.

There's one more safeguard worth knowing about. Real-world statistics don't all arrive the instant a match ends; feeds catch up over hours. So rather than guessing early and publishing a fallback for a player who _did_ play, the game waits for the real data before deciding. If it still hasn't arrived after a long wait, only then does it use the recent-form fallback. It's the difference between a rating that's a bit late and a rating that's simply wrong.

## A Single Score Is Not Form

Two different numbers matter, and people mix them up:

- **A Performance Score** is one appearance. It's spiky by nature — footballers have great days and quiet ones.
- **Form** is the trend. It's built from a run of recent appearances, and there's also a longer view across roughly the last twenty, which tells you whether someone is genuinely reliable or just had one loud afternoon.

That's why a single enormous score barely moves a player's form, and why a consistent 7-out-of-10 midfielder is often more valuable to your season than a forward who alternates between brilliant and invisible.

## How to Use This as a Manager

The practical version:

- **Pick on form and role fit, not reputation.** A famous name in poor form will do less for you than a well-suited squad player who's playing every week.
- **Watch the real fixture list.** A player whose real club has a busy week gives you more to work with than one who's been benched for a month.
- **Value your defence properly.** Clean sheets are worth real points to your team's output, so a settled back four is not a boring investment.
- **Judge over a run, not a night.** One bad score is noise. Four is a message.

If you want the wider daily rhythm, Daily Match Routine (https://worldleaguemanager.com/blog/daily-match-routine) covers what a ten-minute check-in should actually look like, and Tactical Blueprints Explained (https://worldleaguemanager.com/blog/tactical-blueprints-explained) covers turning those players into a shape that works.

## Honest Limits

Because the wrong expectations spoil a good game:

- **Data arrives on a schedule.** Statistics sync through the day, so ratings for late kick-offs land later than early ones.
- **Smaller leagues report less detail.** Coverage of top divisions is richer than the lower reaches of smaller nations.
- **Scores can be corrected.** If a source feed revises a match — a goal reassigned, an assist added — the affected scores are recalculated rather than left wrong.

None of that is hidden from you. Every score can be opened up to show exactly which contributions built it.

* * *

That's the core of it: your players are real, so their form is real, and your team sheet is a genuine question every single day rather than a settled list of the eleven highest numbers.

Every player in the world also belongs to exactly one club here, which is what makes those performances yours alone — more on that in Why Every Player Only Belongs to One Club (https://worldleaguemanager.com/blog/why-every-player-belongs-to-one-club).
