Understanding Position Penalties and Compatibility
Tactics & Strategy
Position Penalties
Players perform best in their natural position. Playing them elsewhere reduces their contribution.
Performance by Position Type
| Position Match | PS Multiplier |
|---|---|
| Natural position | 100% |
| Compatible position | 85% |
| Out of position | 75% |
How Positions Work
Each player has a primary position (their natural role) and may have compatible positions where they can play with reduced penalty. These are detected from real-world stats and deployment patterns.
Examples
- A right-back played at left-back = Compatible (85%)
- A centre-back played in midfield = Out of position (75%)
- A striker played as a winger = Depends on the player's real-world versatility
Checking Position Compatibility
On the Squad page, each player shows their compatible positions. Green indicates natural, yellow indicates compatible, and grey indicates out of position.
Tips
- Always prioritise natural positions where possible
- A slightly weaker player in position often outperforms a stronger player out of position
- Versatile players who can cover multiple positions naturally are extremely valuable in transfers
